Established in 2024 by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government, the Taipei Theatre Awards represents Taiwan’s premier professional honors dedicated exclusively to contemporary theatre and musical productions. The awards aim to recognize artistic and technical excellence both on and off the stage, celebrating the innovation and distinguished achievements that define Taiwan's modern performing arts landscape.

For its first edition, there are 11 categories which include awards for productions, individuals, and special contributions. These included: Best Play, Best Musical, Independent Spirit, Best Director, Best Actor/Actress (Play), Best Actor/Actress (Musical), Best Playwriting, and Best Theatrical Design.

Commencing with the second edition, the Best Theatre Design category has been refined into specialized disciplines—Best Set Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Video / Sound Design—to more accurately honor technical artistry. Furthermore, the Outstanding Musical Theatre Creative Artist has been introduced to encourage further specialization and professional growth within the industry.

The Taipei Theatre Awards serves not only as a prestigious stage for theater practitioners but also as a cornerstone for industry integration and a historical record of the theatrical ecosystem. By fostering public discourse and cultural visibility, the awards mark a new milestone in contemporary Taiwanese theatre. The Second Taipei Theatre Awards Ceremony will take place on Monday, July 6, 2026.
